Public Policy and Morality

Public Policy and Morality

All public policy is legislated morality. In fact, it must be! If our policies aren't rooted in morality, then they're entirely arbitrary.

To pretend that somehow the policies put forth by non-Christians aren't rooted in any morality whatsoever is naive and foolish.

For example, the push for government-run healthcare is rooted in the moral belief that (at least some) human life/health is valuable and those who want to live should have access to the care they desire in order to live the best lives they can. It is also rooted in the moral conviction that people with more money ought to be required under penalty of law to pay for the healthcare of those with less money.

(Conservatives, in contrast, believe that a government monopoly devoid of competition, incentives for innovation, excellent service, competitive prices, etc. is not the best entity to provide that healthcare. Conservatives do not believe that government employees are the best people to provide our healthcare. After all, we've dealt with the DMV, we've seen the waste of the USPS, and we've seen the debt accumulation without commensurate results in the public education system. In fact, we've seen the moral decay and power-induced corruption at all levels of government.)

Another example is the non-Christian's advocacy for so-called transgender affirmation and care, rooted in the moral conviction that a person can become absolutely whatever that person wants or feels. A boy can become a girl and vice versa, and anyone who denies that is rejecting the person's true self.

(Christians, in contrast, believe that God created us male and female, that our sex was determined at conception, and that our true identity is found in the fact that we are all God's image bearers and those who accept Christ are God's children.)

The Left's advocacy for abortion is rooted in the moral belief that a born woman's absolute autonomy is more valuable than an unborn girl's (or boy's) life.

(Conservatives, in contrast, believe that human life--regardless of location, size, stage of development, or level of independence--must be protected as a priority over an individual's desire for sexual autonomy.)

Even the law that we must drive on the right side of the road when in America is rooted in the belief that life matters and therefore people ought not drive cars absolutely anywhere they want.

Unless a law was created by drawing random pieces of paper or Scrabble letters out of a hat, it is rooted in morality. In fact, even a law resulting from such foolish means is rooted in an underlying moral belief that morals are not important enough to root the laws in them.

(Thomas Aquinas would say that such "laws" are no laws at all, but rather they are imposters pretending to be laws. He believed in order to be a true law, it must be an ordinance of reason, for the common good, put forth by those with the authority to do so, and made known rather than kept secret from those expected to follow them.)

Every law, every policy, every political issue, is a matter of morality. To say that Christians ought to stay out of discussions related to public policy--which is actually a subset of ethics, not of science--is to say that non-Christian morality ought to be the law of the land.

Is that seriously what you believe, friends? Do you really believe that it's for the common good, that it best for human flourishing, that our public policies be rooted in a non-Christian worldview?

Which worldview do you prefer? Would you like to see our policies rooted in atheism, which--like every other non-Christian worldview--has no grounding for the inherent value, dignity, and worth of human beings? Would you like to see them grounded in Islam? Hinduism? Buddhism? Please, tell me, and I'll show you where that worldview has consistently led throughout history.
