Support for Gay Marriage Plummets Among Conservatives

Support for Gay Marriage Plummets Among Conservatives

"Gallup’s poll released on Thursday found 41% of GOP voters support gay marriage, as opposed to 55% in 2021 and 2022." [1]

The tides seem to be turning back toward the biblical teaching of marriage, at least among conservatives. I attribute this, at least in part, to the influence of numerous Roman Catholics and a handful of Protestants (Katy Faust) who utilize the natural law to make a case that non-Christians and Christians alike can understand.

Simply quoting Scripture--without any explanation of human design, historical trends, and real-life consequences of same-sex sexuality--has inadvertently convinced people that Christianity doesn't have anything to do with human flourishing. It has caused Christians and non-Christians alike to conclude that God is outdated, or perhaps still in process. It has led to "Progressive Christianity," relativism, the near-eradication of the Christian worldview in our culture (4% according to Barna's latest study), and a complete separation of the sacred from the secular.

If Protestants hope to return to the days of influencing the culture, of creating an environment in which the gospel can be shared freely and contemplated intelligently, of not being forced to celebrate gay sex as a prerequisite for keeping their job, then we need to rediscover natural law arguments for truth.

As we make the case for human nature, design, purpose, and rights that lead to human flourishing, this raises the question of where it all comes from. After all, if there is a design to humanity, there must be a designer. If there is a natural law, there must be a natural law giver.

To make natural law arguments is not to compromise on the gospel; on the contrary, it is to lead right into a conversation about who this designer is and what he desires for his people.
